Great article about 'pattern cutters'. For my line I'm both designer and 'pattern cutter', they really do go hand in hand. YSL famously said, "Fashion isn't considered an art but it takes an artist to do it." I always think of that when I'm creating a pattern even if it's a fairly simple shape, there's art in the details.
This technique is really beautiful. Just after I graduated from design school a class in tambour beading became available and I missed it. So I taught myself. It's not hard just tedious but entirely worth it and actually kind of relaxing. I listen to a lot of this podcast while I do it.
