This article made me happy. For my line I'm both designer and 'pattern cutter', in the states we call ourselves 'pattern makers'. It's always nice to get a little kudos for the work. Most people think of fashion design as sketching and choosing; color, fabric, trims etc. but there is a lot more to getting a shape right. Pattern making takes skill and training but also something a bit more. YSL famously said, "Fashion isn't considered an art but it takes an artist to do it."

This technique is really beautiful. Just after I graduated from design school a class in tambour beading became available and I missed it. So I taught myself. It's not hard just tedious but entirely worth it and actually kind of relaxing. I listen to a lot of this podcast while I do it.
